Canada's ethanol mandate is being met in a large part by a torrent of U.S. corn ethanol flooding across the border. The five percent federal mandate requires 2.2 billion litres of ethanol to be blended into the fuel supply annually.

The study, entitled "2012 Corn Ethanol: Emerging Plant Energy and Environmental Technologies," shows that thermal energy use at a typical dry mill ethanol plant has fallen 9% since 2008, showing a diminishing carbon footprint of corn ethanol, RFA said.

While the U.S. was supposed to be much further into green energy use, advances in oil drilling technology have led to a fossil fuel revolution, the Associated Press reports. Despite innovation in clean energy technology, still less than 5 percent of U.S. power generation last year came in the form of solar, wind and geothermal sources, while 10 percent of gasoline demand was satisfied with corn ethanol.

In the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, it laid out a framework that was set to increase ethanol in the U.S. to help reduce our dependence on foreign oil. A large part of that effort thus far has been fulfilled with corn ethanol .
