Everything George P. Mitchell did flew in the face of convention. It's no wonder that the process he pioneered is commonly called "unconventional" drilling. The wildcatter tried for 17 years to find the right cocktail of chemicals that would crack the Barnett Shale. He did it in spite of so many naysayers who never thought it would work. "A lot of people have a hard time seeing beyond where they are at right now.

Chesapeake has natural gas interests in the Haynesville, Bossier, Marcellus, and Barnett shale . The company also has numerous liquid interests in multiple states. CHK has the potential to be a promising investment if a few key wrinkles are ironed out.

New troubles are bubbling to the surface for Chesapeake Energy in the Barnett Shale. Fort Worth billionaire Ed Bass, whose family fortune is grounded in oil, says one of the biggest drilling companies in the country is pulling a slick one. He's suing Chesapeake Energy, accusing them of cheating him and 22 others out of millions of dollars in royalties.

Edward Bass and other Barnett Shale mineral owners filed a lawsuit today against Chesapeake Operating Inc. (NYSE: CHK) and Chesapeake Exploration LLC, saying the energy company underpaid on royalty payments. The mineral owners represent 4,000 acres and are seeking "millions of dollars" that are owed to them on their leases by Oklahoma City-based Chesapeake, said Daniel Charest, a principal partner with the Dallas office of Susman Godfrey, which represents the Bass family.
