Dynegy Inc. (NYSE: DYN) and Ameren Corp. (NYSE: AEE) have inked a deal in which Dynegy will acquire five coal-fired power plants in Illinois. The complex agreement will see Illinois Power Holdings LLC, a unit of Houston-based Dynegy, acquire Ameren's subsidiary, Ameren Energy Resources, including several other subsidiaries that operate the power plants, Dynegy said in a statement. Ameren is headquartered in St. Louis, Mo. Dynegy will not pay any cash in the deal.

Ameren Corp. has announced that it plans to get out of the merchant generation business due to a weak market. The utility has no plans to close any plants but will look to sell off one or more of its natural gas plants in the future.

Ameren Corp. officials said that Richard Mark has been promoted to chairman, president and CEO of Ameren Illinois Co., an electric and gas delivery utility subsidiary of Ameren Corp., effectively immediately. Mark replaces Scott Cisel, who left to pursue other interests, according to the company. Mark joined Ameren in 2002 and has been senior vice president of customer operations at Ameren Missouri since 2009. Michael Moehn, who has been senior vice president of customer operations at Ameren Illinois
