For more than half a century nuclear energy has been an important part of our nation's power supply. Today it accounts for almost one-fifth of the total electricity generated in the United States. According to the latest data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration, in 2009 Florida's three nuclear plants generated 13.4 percent of the state's electricity.
