Progress Energy and Tampa Electric are warning customers of a recent telephone-based scam. Both companies say their offices have received complaints from small businesses such as medical clinics, law firms and beauty salons about people calling and impersonating utility representatives. The caller claims the power will be turned off unless an unpaid balance is made current and then asks for a credit card number, which later is illegally used, according to a written statement.
